Area 26

~8 Weeks development time.

Area 26 is a Horror Cleaning game made as a group project in UE5 using Blueprint and UMG.

I took on the role as the Lead UI designer and was also a tech for helping with some other areas in the project.

This by far is my best UI work to date.

As this was a group project and I had a specific role, I had much more time to focus and challenge myself with things such as spatial and diegetic UI elements.

I did a lot of experimentation in the main menu, utilising spatial widgets such as all the main menus, difficulty selection, credits and descriptions.

I got to create my own environment for the main menu using assets that our artists had created throughout the project duration, and I kept updating the menu as different decisions were made.

I also did the music but I am by no means a musician

I wanted to challenge myself by trying some diagetic UI.

I decided that the player's timer and lives would be on a watch that is on the player's wrist, with a somewhat realistic way to show the player's lives:

The watch's design was the artist's idea

I included a hotbar to display the player's tools and other notable elements

  • Includes number keys

  • Clearly displays which tool is selected

  • Animated to not be intrusive when out of use

  • Icons to display the tool in the simplest way

A room tasks progress bar

  • Shows room progress

  • Displays room completion

  • animates of screen to be non intrusive

A simple themed minimap

  • Displays player location when in a room to not be over informative

  • Displays info for the game mode

  • Displayed my holding tab so it can be kept of the HUD at all times

My current method of handling game settings is by storing the values in the game instancve though I'm sure this can be done a different way.

To top it all off, I created a UI curve material it give it that one extra little bit of prettiness. (Kieran's face sadly not included)

As with all my projects, there's a lot I'd want to improve on. But for now, this is my proudest work and I can wait for my next project
